How we Determine the ThinkSolar Score

Q&A from our 'Learn about Solar' series.

Each location looked up at ThinkSolar will be given a score and grade based on a number of important metrics. These metrics are a combination of availability of tax credits and rebates combined with weather-related metrics. See below or a complete list.

  • 2016 Electric Price - Using the US Energy Information Administration data
  • 15-month Electric Price Increase Rate - Also using the US EIA data, we analyzed the last 15 months of local electric prices and projected the trajectory of local electric prices.
  • Peak Sunlight Hours per Day - We analyzed 30 years worth of NREL data to see how much peak sunlight hours a particular lcoation typically gets.
  • OpenPV Installations - How many solar panel installations have been reported in the state in question? Data via the OpenPV Project
  • Leasing Allowed - Does the state in question allow the leasing of solar energy systems?
  • Net Metering - Does the location allow solar energy system owners for the extra electricity they add back to the electric grid?
  • Interconnection - Interconnection standards are the legal rules and procedures for "plugging" a renewable energy system into the power grid.

  • Local Performance Payouts - data via Database of State Incentives for Renewables & Efficiency
